AIRLIFE Denver Crew Quarters & Hangar Takes Flight

The Maintenance & Emergency Service Department of E Light Electric Services, Inc. – one of the top electrical contractors in Denver- has recently completed the AIRLIFE Crew Quarters & Hangar project at Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree, Colorado. This 9,100 square foot, 2-story project provides accommodations for the AIRLIFE Denver team, storage, and a maintenance and repair helicopter hangar.

The project team included: General Contractor, Emerald C.M., Inc.; Architect, Davis/Jones Architecture; and Engineer, Kazin & Associates.

E Light Electric was contracted to replace the temporary crew module that had been onsite for the last two years with a permanent facility. The six-month schedule included a building to accommodate one pilot and two nurses, a kitchen, office, storage and mechanical space. The project also included a 4,325 square foot, three-helicopter hangar.

Improved Patient Response

“E Light was very excited to be a part of this critical project for improving patient response times to AIRLIFE Denver for our community,” said Service Account Manager, Phil Robertson. Because helicopters can now be stored in a climate-controlled hangar, there is no need for snow/ice removal before takeoff. This subsequently improves the patient response times for AIRLIFE.

Electrical

E Light was subcontracted for the electrical, including: fire alarm, lightning protection and site lighting. A large challenge included providing power and teledata service to the new structure under an existing parking lot.

A 280-foot underground directional bore was completed to provide a 4” power conduit and a 2” teledata conduit from the main hospital to the new building. Once the boring crew had reached the hospital, scaffolding was erected inside an airshaft and core drills were utilized to penetrate two, 16” reinforced concrete walls for the conduits. E Light electricians then intercepted, transitioned and routed the conduits into the hospital to their final destinations.

With the new structure and the hangar’s location, the directional lighting for the final helicopter approach/takeoff had to be adjusted. Some of the site lighting poles were lowered to 10 feet on the SE corner of the building or relocated altogether.
